Dame Evelyn Glennie is a Scottish percussionist who lost most of her hearing by age 12. To cope with her passion of music and her inability to hear she has a variety of ways to listen to the music and feel it. At most of her live performances she wears no shoes so she can feel the vibrations of the drums and mallet instruments she plays. In this talk she describes her life as a deaf musician and the hard ships of it. She goes in detail about the criticism and doubt she receives from her teachers, fellow classmates, and the world around her. She also talks about how music can "talk" and that its just not a plethora of black dots on some lined pieces of paper. You can make music "talk" by showing dynamics in the chart.; dynamics are what make a piece music very loud, very quiet, maybe fast or slow. Mostly every percussionist listens to what they play or who they play with through their ears. Evelyn listens to the music through her eyes and by her surroundings. A feature which lets you know how to truly listen.
